Poor Ferrari or Poor Man’s Ferrari?

Ferrari F355 GTSPLEASANT GROVE – The Ferrari F355 was built from 1994-99 and was the successor to the F348.  The F355 is a mid-engine, real-wheeled drive, V-8 powered machine.  It was offered in several models and this particular one shown is the GTS , released in 1995.  The GTS is based off the Berlinetta but offered a targa-style roof instead.  Over 2,500 models were made, most of them being sent to the US, but until now, I had never seen one in person. As I passed by the house it was parked at, I flipped around and pulled over to get a better look.  I even went knocking on the door of the presumed owner, unfortunately nobody was home to answer any of my questions.  Because I had plenty.

Several things are wrong with the scenario which I found myself and the exotic car in, and most of them are obvious from the pictures.  First, without judgement, I wasn’t in the most up-kept neighborhood where I found this car.  Second, it’s dirty, it’s covered in dust, and it’s dirty.  Third, why is this “Ferrari” out in the open, barely in a covered spot, not receiving protection from the elements?  Then it hit me, it must be a kit car.  I knocked on the door several times to inquire about the diamond in the rough (conditions).  Nobody answered, so I quickly snapped some photos and left the scene, hoping I wouldn’t run into anybody on my way out.

I did not get a glimpse of the interior, nor did I take the time to investigate the wheels and body for flaws, confirming any suspicions. I did however, quickly return to work and inquired on the knowledge of a good friend over at The Daily Derbi to help me investigate my find.  We searched for as many photos as we could online of the GTS model and comparing my photos to every possible angle we could find.  The only obvious differences were the rims, which are definitely not the stock option, and the grill which appears to be different as well.  Up close, the F355 does look a little bit like a MR2 which triggered my original suspicions.  I did discover that several kits for the F355 GTS were made, particularly for a 99-05 Corvette, Fiero, and more commonly, an MR2 MKII.

My conclusion, I don’t have one.  If it is a kit, I don’t believe it is on a MR2 based on this YouTube video (the front end on this one looks shorter than the one I saw).  If it is a kit, it must be based off a Corvette.

So, what do you think?  Poor Ferrari, or poor man’s Ferrari?

**UPDATE**
It’s the real deal.  We just got back from speaking with the owner and it is a 1996 F355 GTS that was originally purchased in Texas. Only has about 38,000 miles on it but doesn’t currently run because an issue with the battery.  The owner purchased the car over a year ago from family and hasn’t seen the road much.  As for it’s condition, he plans to get it cleaned up before winter and cover it up from the elements.  Wheels are not original to the car but are original Ferrari wheels.  Hopefully we’ll hear it out cruising a lot more next Spring.

The Punisher is Born

Lindon Collision Center Car Show
LINDON – Three and a half years ago, Eric, owner of Lindon Collision Center, and his brother, wanted a project.  It didn’t take them long until they decided on a 1972 Dodge Challenger.  Bringing it back to the shop they burned maybe too much rubber and immediately started evaluating it.  Not soon after it entered the garage doors a friend stopped by and instantly received a vision for the old Challenger.  Today, Lindon Collision Center presents to you, The Punisher.

1972 Dodge ChallangerFirst, a little history on how this work of art came to be. The Challenger was to be a completely custom job.  It was torn apart to be evaluated for rust, damage, and any other underlying issues and soon after was prepped for extensive body work, a coat of primer, and a bumpy road.  Eric says he’s had two main goals in life besides a family, “My first goal was that I always wanted a body shop, every since I was a kid.  Second, I’ve always wanted to put a car in a magazine, preferably on the cover.  I’ve always wanted that”.  Eric had no idea what he and his staff would create in less than four years’ time.

Soon after fitting the suspension and changing a few aesthetics, Eric hired Walker, a young kid who knew his way around metal. The exterior finally began to get its shape.  While still maintaining the stunning curves of a Challenger, the car became a one-of-a-kind.

Originally the big 440 engine was constructed to handle a NOS system along with several other modifications.  Before the engine was finished, the friend with the vision walked in and voiced his opinion another way.  It wasn’t what he wanted in the car, it had more potential.  A twin turbo it was.

72 Dodge Challenger - STS TurboAfter tearing down what was almost a completed project, it was decided that Eric and his crew would head down to STS to purchase a twin turbo, rear-mounted system to put on the muscle car.  The turbos were mounted underneath the car, a 3” pipe was run all the way back and as crew member Brandon puts it, “We took STS and made it beautiful”, and beautiful it is.

The Punisher has a 727 transmission, an Edelbrock fuel injector, and is fitted with a custom roll cage.  The roll cage is mounted to the walls of the engine bay and runs throughout the car being hidden from sight.  For wheels it has 19”F & 20”R Michelin tires fitted with DPE rims, with Magnum force suspension in the front and Art Mortensen suspension in the back with strange gears & coil over shocks.  The best part of the car is the front and the rear.  Not only was it fitted with headlights & taillights taken from a 2009 Challenger, but the custom work put into both ends is absolutely stunning.  That’s all breath taking, but how does it sound?  “This thing is louder than a NASCAR” says Eric & Brandon proudly.

Lindon Collision 72 Punisher 404Did I mention that this car is completely custom?  If I haven’t, the interior gives it away.  The interior of the Punisher is another piece of art itself.  Inside you’ll instantly notice the black Dodge Viper racing seats, blue LED’s, gauges, & switches, stud aligned trim on the doors and center console, and the sound system hidden behind the seats.  The inside is simple but punishing at the same time.

To awe over the interior some more, you can’t see the custom roll cage.  It was built in into the frame, being hidden beneath the carpet of the car and along the upper framework as well.  Only by the rear window can two bars be notice going straight into the trunk area.  At least we can say the Punisher is stable

There are no numbers for horsepower or torque yet as the car has not been tuned.  After the car show this Friday, May 11, where it will be on display, it will be taken back to the garage for some final evaluations and tuning.  Until then, enjoy the Punisher.

Strange 3-Wheeled Car Rolling through Utah Streets

OREM – Local car enthusiast Chris Redd noticed a strange 3-wheeled vehicle over the weekend in Orem, Utah while his mom took video of the mystery machine from her vehicle while driving.  “Wow, it’s all covered up like a prototype.  As I kept watching the video I noticed it had a front similar to that of a Porsche or Volkswagen but I knew it couldn’t be a Porsche”, says Chris.

three-wheeled porsche lookalikeThe weirdly constructed tricycle, if you want to call it that, appeared to have a Porsche-like front end, but is very misleading with a very skinny, pinched by an ogre, type back end with only one wheel.  “We don’t get many test cars in Utah and it isn’t something that Porsche would likely build”, says Chris of the prototype.

Taking a look at the videos posted below you can see the Porsche-like front end, but it just seems too far-fetched of a project for Porsche, so the thoughts get raised to a possible Can-Am Spyder home project or other ATV-styled machine.  It does, however, appear to be a test model of some sort as the car is wrapped to hide any indication of curves or design.

So what is it, a wannabe Porsche, an off-road vehicle wrapped up for Christmas?  How about a Vanderhall?  You heard me, Vanderhall [insert pun here].  Vanderhall Motor Works is a Utah based company that is developing these hybrid sports test mules.  Unfortunately they don’t have a name for their prototype that we know of but it will be powered by a turbo ICE with no hybrid or assist.  They are speculating it to have around 200hp and 200lb-ft of torque and will be mated to a six-speed auto shift transmission.  I hear another hybrid sports car coming on.  Sounds compelling (watch all four wheels Fisker).

The prototype testers have been able to record a time of 4.5 seconds going from 0-60 mph.  The vehicle weighs in somewhere between 1,300 – 1,500 lbs and can be compared to the Mini and the SmartCar.  What about the seating layout?  Think of an airplane; a single seat in the front and a jump seat behind it.  It’s sure to be a back seat view your date won’t want to remember as the best first date ever.

Vanderhall also claims that this 3-wheeled sports prototype can illustrate the same stability of any four wheel sports cars because of its low CG and weight distribution.  And of course, the most important factor, an average of 40/60 mpg city/highway.

All in all, here comes the Vanderhall.  It is planned to be launched sometime in 2013 and is sure to turn heads but probably not the wallets of the vander-pincher’s, I mean, penny pincher’s.
